This week is our final Open House. The 8th Grade Open House istonight at 7:00 p.m. Be sure to arrive early to purchase Directories and Spirit Wear in the Rotunda. Thank you to everyone who helped with Open House, including our Directory Sales Committee (Carol Rooney, Suzanne Domenici, Jen Anderson, Julie Hancock, and Tricia Spenner), our Spirit Wear Committee (Anne Chiapetti, Adrienne Niederreither, Beverly Wagner, Erika Morris, and Sarah Dimonekas), our Hospitality Committee and Grade Reps (Lisa Schofield, Pamela Whitaker, Carley Hayes, Kristina Puff, and Allison McDermott), and everyone who provided refreshments during “lunch” period. We’d also like to thank Jessica Hoyt for all her hard work on our Directory!
The Magazine Drive begins this week. This important school fundraiser helps support our in-school student programs including clubs, intramural sports, and field trips. These activities are part of what make Middlesex Middle School a special experience for our kids. Please consider buying a subscription or renewing an existing one in support of our school.

We are counting down the days to the Boston Trip and have available t-shirts, long sleeve t-shirts, and sweatshirts to purchase. Apparel is not mandatory but it is a great keepsake of the trip and makes for easy identification for the group. MMS MAGAZINE DRIVE
Please support the annual Magazine Drive which begins Wednesday, September 16th and ends September 28th!
The Magazine Drive is the largest fundraiser for MMS with funds going directly to supplement student programs – clubs, activities, intramural sports and field trips. Please support MMS by purchasing a new subscription or renewing a current one. Also, please consider buying a subscription for a wounded soldier or veteran through our 7th annual “Gift of Gratitude” program.
The children will be receiving all the materials at an assembly Wednesday. Be sure to have them neatly fill out and return their “Reach Out” booklets at lunch time the next day (Thursday, 9/17) with 7- 10 addresses, to be entered in a raffle for a $300 Apple gift card!! SEPAC OCTOBER MEETING: IS MY CHILD MAKING PROGRESS? UNDERSTANDING PROGRESS MONITORING
On Monday, October 15th at 11am
in the Royle School Common Room, Dr. Susie Da Silva, Assistant Superintendent of Schools K-12, will discuss the purpose and components of a strong Scientifically Research-Based Intervention (SRBI) model. TOPS – ATTENTION 8TH GRADE PARENTS
The 2015/16 TOPS program invites your child to its kick-off event: The 8th Grade Beach Party! Friday, September 18th from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Weed Beach.
8th Grade students who would like to attend must be registered TOPS members (for your convenience, TOPS membership forms were included in the MMS back-to-school mailing.) There are two membership options: advance paid (covering entrance to all TOPS events for the 2015/16 school year) or pay-per-event. In addition, registration information can be found at www.darienct.gov/yc
. Entrance fee for the Beach Party is $15 for pay-per-event members and includes dj, entertainment, dancing, pizza, refreshments and a whole lot of fun
! (Please note: rain location for this event is the Town Hall Gymnasium.)

“Cops and Kids Adventures” Applications are now being taken for the 2015-2016 year. The intent of this program is to allow officers to engage with youths outside of their roles as police officers so that they can see kids as kids, and the kids can see police officers as everyday people with families, interests, and hobbies. This program meets 2
Saturday’s a month. Field trips include EMPOWER Leadership Sports & Adventure Center, Sky Zone, Bowling, Go-Karting. Application forms can be found on The Depot website www.dariendepot.com

POSITIVE FAMILY COMMUNICATION
Do family dinners really matter? Research shows that youth who have regular family meals are far less likely to engage in risky behaviors, tend to get better grades, exhibit less stress and eat healthier. 67% of Darien middle schoolers thought they communicated well with their parents and would seek their advice. So have a family dinner it’s a great way to keep the lines of communication open.
BOY SCOUTS COMMUNITY CAMPOREE
Come join the Darien Boy Scouts for a Community Camporee onSaturday 9/26 from 12 to 4 PM at Tilley Pond Park! To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouting in Darien, our two Boy Scout troops are providing an interactive day of family fun for all ages, with hands-on demonstrations of skills such as fire-building, campsite set-up, outdoor cooking, orienteering, pioneering, fishing, and more! We invite the entire community, scouts or not, to come enjoy a day of outdoor fun and get to know your local Scouts and their history!

“Organizing Your Child for a Successful School Year”,
Systems and Strategies for Teaching Organization, on Tues, Sept. 22nd, 9:30am, First Congregational Church, 14 Brookside Road, Darien.
Professional organizer Seana Turner will share ideas on how parents can help their children be efficient and successful during the school year. The talk is targeted to parents of children ages 4 through 11, and topics will include setting up a homework station, backpack management, implementing staging areas, using planners and managing time.
Seana Turner, founded The Seana Method, a professional organizing company that provides solutions for managing time, space and belongings. Her goal is to provide “freedom through organization.” Seana is a Darien resident and has two daughters who attended Darien schools and are successfully organizing themselves in college.
TEEN LEAN MACHINE AT THE DARIEN Y!
The Y’s best program for the youth, designed to incorporate healthy habits in their lives! Participants will be scored by tracking activity and sleep using a Fitbit Flex Wristband, which is designed to instill healthy habits.
Participants will also be tracked by Fun Fitness Tests and Assessments, which will be administered at the
half way point and conclusion of the competition. Participants also receive 2 group training sessions per week on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5-6pm and 2 Interactive Nutrition sessions. The competition runs 8 weeks fromSeptember 26th to November 21st

The girls hockey team will once again collect gently used sports equipment for their fall fundraiser. The sale will take place in theDHS cafeteria on September 19th from 9:00am – 1:00pm.
